The foundation’s latest contribution to K to 12’s aim of providing mastery of concepts and skills in Mathematics.
MathDali revolves around the story of Kuya Robi (played by Robi Domingo), a Math enthusiast, who helps Igi Boy Flores, Vic Robinson III, and twins Joj and Jai Agpangan in their fun adventures overcoming their fear of Math and mastering the subject along the way.
Inspired by the positive norms, key strategies and classroom approaches from Jo Boaler’s “Math Mindset” and “What’s Math Got to Do With It?”, as well as the importance of number talks in Cathy Humphreys and Ruth Parker’s “Making Number Talks Matter”, each episode illustrates a Math concept through real-life situations that aims to positively change how to learn Math, develop conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and problem solving, allowing the students to learn in new ways, and make the learning experience both interesting and exciting.
Robi, Igi Boy, Vic, Joj and Jai together with the whole production team headed by Mariles Gonzales, the same mind who brought you Mathtinik, Sines’kwela, Epol-Apple, Hirayamanawari, Bayani among many others guarantee a fun and interactive way of teaching and learning Math as the show promotes strategies to foster a growth mindset. Discovered by Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, growth mindset posits that skills and abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. You don’t have to be born with a talent. This change and advancement can come through experience and application.
“Huwag tayong matakot sa Math. Kasi sobrang essential nito sa buhay natin. Dito tayo pwedeng matuto ng mga certain values na maia-apply natin sa buhay natin. Hindi lang ‘to about numbers and how to solve problems. Tinuturuan kang mas maging determined, mas maging patient, at mas madiskarte. Malaking bagay ang naitutulong ng Math na hindi natin nakikita at first glance,” Vic added.
“Sana marami kaming kids na ma-inspire at ma-engganyo na mag-aral ng Math, na hindi nila gawing mindset na mahirap yung Math kundi masaya ang Math kapag nag-aral ka,” expressed Joj and Jai, who happens to be advocates of their own charities back home.
“Sa pamagitan ng Math, makikita nyo ang mas masayang bahagi [ng Math]. Dito sa programa natin, hindi lang namin, programa nating lahat ay maglalaro tayo at kaakibat noon, syempre, marami tayong matututunan na mga paraan kung paano mag-solve ng mga bagay-bagay,” Robi ended.
The stars in the series are excited to be part of an education show that champions progressive ideas in Math that would impact how Math is learned in a national scale. All five actors profess that the series is a fresh take from their past acting roles. Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) babies Robi, Joj and Jai pursued different paths in show business. The Bacolod-raised twins from PBB Teen Edition 4 got hold of character roles, most recently in the primetime hit Forevermore while Robi, after winning 1st runner-up in Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition in 2008 angled most of his career at hosting and when offered the Mathdali project, gave no second thoughts.
“Gusto ko ‘tong project na ‘to kasi sobrang fan na ako. Bata pa lang ako, pinapanood ko na yung Sineskwela, Mathtinik, Epol-Apple, Hirayamanawari, Bayani—lahat! Childhood ko ‘yan. Kaya nung binigyan ako ng opportunity ng Knowledge Channel na magkaroon ng programa lalung-lalo na, yung isa sa mga paborito kong subjects ay Math, um-oo ako agad. Ngayon, panibagong barkada, panibagong kulay, at panibagong imahe.” said the 26-year old VJ, actor, dancer, and host.
“Dream talaga namin ang mag-inspire ng kids and to be parang mga Math educators so it’s a privilege. Kasi kahit kami mismo natututo din,” said the ever cheerful duo of Joj and Jai.
Even Igi Boy Flores, who is mainly known for his friendly, comedic roles in Goin’ Bulilit and the Sunday teen-oriented show Luv U, couldn’t hide his enthusiasm in sharing the audience what he has learned.
“Sa project na ‘to nakikita ko na ako mismo, natututo rin at in-explain ko sa kanila kung paano [ang gagawin] so excited ako na ipakita sa kanila na hindi isang solution lang para ma-solve mo ang isang problem, marami pang ibang paraan na mas madali at mas maiintindihan mo. Excited ako na ma-enjoy nila ang Math,” stated Igi.
Now making a television comeback, the young theater actor from Iloilo is applying work and play shifting from one character to another. For Vic, it’s more than the delivery of the script.
“Excited akong matuto. Bilang host, kailangang gamay na gamay ko rin yung mga ginagawa ko sa program, at the same time nare-revist ko yung mga natutunan ko dati at marami pa akong natututunan. Hindi lang ako nagme-memrorize ng script, iniintindi ko yung sinasabi ko dahil, essential ‘yon para sa learning ng mga bata.”
Mathdali will be aired under the Mathematics curriculum block on K Channel 5 starting this 14 June 2016, every Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00A.M. and 1:20P.M. on your Sky and Destiny Digibox and ABS-CBN TV Plus.
