In honor of Mr. Gabby Lopez’s birthday, the OML Center conducted a climate change workshop to representatives of ABS–CBN’s Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc.-Bantay Kalikasan (ALKFI-BK) last December 20, 2018.
The workshop is a birthday gift of OML Center staff to Mr. Lopez, who is a member of the Center’s Board of Trustees. Last year, the Center started gifting its Board of Trustees with a pledge of one hour of volunteer work to their selected charities. Mr. Lopez nominated Bantay Kalikasan as his beneficiary.
In coordination with BK Program Director Jen Santos, five staff members from the OML Center provided an overview of the different concepts of climate change and facilitated a hands-on workshop to 14 ALKFI-BK participants comprised mostly of community organizers and foresters. Participants were divided into two groups--one focused on the La Mesa Watershed and the other on Barangay Tumana, Marikina City--to ensure that the workshop would result in the development of materials of actual use to the communities. The groups were then given an opportunity to map the key facilities, available resources, and ecosystem services of their designated communities.
The OML Center staff also guided each group in the identification and discussion of climate-related hazards that have affected the community and their livelihood in the past. The session highlighted for the participants the interconnections of the most important resources in their designated communities and the cascading impacts (whether direct or indirect) of climate-related hazards from one resource to another.
The OML Center was represented by Jane Delfino, Perlyn Pulhin-Yoshida, Alfi Cura, Eli Lucas, and Kimy Fernandez.
